Devotional: John 3:1-10

It’s easy to get mired in debate about how birth in the Spirit takes place. Some think it’s an event, others a process.

What we’re all sure about is that to be born in the Spirit means to see ourselves, to see others and to see our relationship with God differently. It means, I think, that we make ourselves open to new discoveries every day.

If you’ve ever watched the sun rise or set from the Lakeside dock, you understand Chip Richter when he leads our children from Hoover Auditorium to the words of the 118th Psalm:

“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

But some Bible translations put this differently:

“This is the day the Lord acted; we will rejoice and celebrate in it.” The Lord has acted, is acting, and will act. To be born in the Spirit is to ask: where is the Lord acting today?

Is God acting through me, acting upon me, acting through others near and far, acting through us together, acting in nature, acting where and through whom we least expect it? New birth; constant discovery. Where is God acting now?

It’s true—if you can remember Chip’s song, you can find […]
