Help Lakeside Enhance the Miniature Golf Course

Staff Blogger: Jessica Kidd, Advancement Manager

McKinneyAs we know, the Chautauqua experience is based upon the exploration and enrichment of life through four pillars: religion, education, cultural arts and recreation. Each pillar provides opportunities for Lakesiders of all ages to grow mentally, physically and spiritually.

For Lakesiders like Tom McKinney, the Chautauqua experience has been an important part of his life.

McKinney’s first memory of Lakeside is running along the dock during the hot and sunny summer days. The lakefront was a place he spent much of his time.

Also, near the lakefront was Central Park, the center for vibrant colors; a place where Lakesiders of all ages cheered with excitement and children often cried out “Did you see that, Mom and Dad? A hole-in-one!” McKinney too was attracted to the miniature golf course.

When asked what his favorite thing about playing mini-golf at Lakeside was, he stated, “It’s always a great time to socialize. I miss the loopty loop. That was my favorite hole.”

Socializing, whether it is to reminisce, teach a young one how to play the game or catch up with summertime friends, can always be seen at the Lakeside miniature golf course.

McKinney went on to reminisce about his most memorable moments near the mini-golf course, having squirt gun wars in the park. He was always the sitting duck in the “Putt Putt Hut,” so he bought the biggest super soaker he could find.

What would the world be like without Lakeside, was a question that was posed to McKinney to conclude our conversation. His reply was, “How dare you ask such a question…would there be a world?”

To many special community members, like McKinney, Lakeside is not just a place to summer vacation or “just live” year-round. Lakeside, with the memorable Chautauqua experience, is their world. It is a world that includes religious, educational, cultural arts and recreational opportunities to nurture the mind, body and spirit.

With the generous gifts, time, dedication and partners such as #GivingTuesday, the Chautauqua experience will continue to touch the lives of so many year after year.
