On December 2, 2014, Lakeside Chautauqua will partner with #GivingTuesday for the second year. The purpose of this special day of giving is to encourage a tradition of generosity during the holiday season, which coincides with family celebrations and holiday shopping.
Through the launch of our #GivingTuesday initiative to enhance the recreation pillar, many community members have offered to tell their Lakeside stories. These stories share how enhancements to the Lakeside miniature golf course will continue to bring families and friends across multiple generations closer together.
For families, like the Smiths, the miniature golf course has been a part of their renewal experience for many years. In 1972, Steven Smith accepted a seasonal position to work alongside his brother, Dave, and Frank Floding at the Lakeside miniature golf course.
“The golf course clubhouse was where everyone seemed to hang out in the park,” Smith remembers. “There was always a crowd.”
When asked what he would hear if he closed his eyes and pretended to be on the Lakeside mini-golf course, Smith shared, “Shouts from people swimming at the dock, basketballs bouncing on the court, shuffleboard discs clacking, bells ringing in the Pavilion and splashing waves.”
If you closed your eyes and pretended to be at the Lakeside miniature golf course right now, what would you hear?
Smith went on to say, “The world would not be as enjoyable and fun without Lakeside, and that the world would be boring without miniature golf because it makes people happy.”
Although Smith has outgrown his summer position at the miniature golf course, the tradition has flourished within his family. Not only has his brother worked there, but his daughters and his cousin’s two children have also worked there.
When asked how he would describe Lakeside to someone who has never enjoyed the Chautauqua experience, Smith described it as a “Great place for the whole family, especially kids, because of the freedom they can have. Lakeside has it all; entertainment, education, recreation and culture.”
As we can see from these Lakeside stories, such as the Smiths’, the Chautauqua experience remains in the hearts of so many. The mission that brings to life the unique experience continues to enhance our community through projects like the #GivingTuesday miniature golf initiative. As we continue to strengthen the recreation pillar, we continue to strengthen our time spent with loved ones, while continuing our favorite Lakeside traditions.
