Lakeside Enters New Partnership with Avery’s Café & Catering

Scott & Josie Kluding - Avery's CafeWith Black Tie Catering ending their services with Lakeside Chautauqua in January, Lakeside welcomes Avery’s Café & Catering owners, Scott and Josie Kluding, as the new managers of the Hotel Lakeside Dining Room & Café, Lakeside’s catering services and breakfast at Hotel Lakeside and the Fountain Inn.

“We are very excited to partner with Scott and Josie,” said Lakeside Chautauqua President & CEO Kevin Sibbring. “They will bring a history of serving Lakesiders and a fresh take on food service.”

The couple has always been involved in the food service industry, but it was not until after their son’s wedding in October 2003 that they decided to start their own catering business.

“Our son was getting married at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, and we just couldn’t find a good caterer in the area,” said Josie. “So, we decided to cater the wedding ourselves and then start our own catering business.”

A few years later, in April 2006, the couple decided to open their own restaurant, Avery’s Café, offering a casual and relaxed dining experience.

The restaurant was named after their grandson, Avery, who is now 15 years old. This April, the restaurant will celebrate 11 years in operation.

“We provide a relaxed atmosphere that is kid-friendly, and we have a pet-friendly porch,” said Josie. “We also make sure to maintain our good, quality image through our employees and the guidelines we set for them.”

Avery’s Café is open year-round from 7 a.m.-3 p.m., daily and is located at 306 W. Main St. in Marblehead.

Now, Scott and Josie are excited to begin working with Lakeside during the 2015 summer season.

“I think this partnership is a really good opportunity for Lakeside and Marblehead,” replied Josie. “It’s a great stepping stone to build a stronger connection.”

The couple is especially looking forward to the opportunity to taking on this new challenge and expanding their catering business.

Scott has already started reviewing the catering menus Lakeside offers to groups. He has lowered various prices and added new menu selections, but said, “Everything is still a work in progress.”

This year, they have decided to introduce new ‘specialty catering’ menu options for incoming groups and events to choose from.

In addition to transitioning catering at Lakeside, Scott and Josie are in the beginning stages of prepping the Hotel Lakeside Dining Room & Café for the Chautauqua season.

Beginning this summer, the Hotel Lakeside Dining Room & Café will be open daily from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner to guests.

Breakfast will shift from a continental style to a formal sit-down breakfast with a full menu for patrons. There will also be separate menus for lunch and dinner, with an average of seven to eight staple items to choose from, including gluten free and vegetarian selections.

“We are definitely going to be adding burgers and fries to the menu, and perch,” commented Josie. “We are also planning to offer a home-style dinner special Monday-Thursday, among the other options.”

On Fridays and Saturdays, a special menu will be offered in addition the regular dinner menu.

“The dinner menu will have similar options to what has been served in the past, with some new items as well,” said Scott. “There will be several sandwich options added for dinner.”

The couple also hopes to be able to offer Lakesiders ‘special dinners’ throughout the summer.

“These events would be by reservation only, but we would love to have a crab boil or fish fry in the hotel courtyard a few nights throughout the summer,” said Josie.

With all of the new changes at the Hotel Lakeside Dining Room & Café, Scott and Josie said, “We want to keep the formality of the restaurant, but keep it family-friendly at the same time.”

The Hotel Lakeside Dining Room & Café will tentatively be open on weekends (Friday-Sunday) in May and September-October. The official opening of the dining room will be over Memorial Day weekend with regular hours of operation from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. daily.

Scott has been coming to Lakeside all his life. His mother grew up in Lakeside and graduated from Lakeside High School, now Danbury Local Schools, in 1956.

With the convenience of living in the area, Scott and Josie have since been coming to Lakeside together for years.

This summer, the couple is most looking forward to seeing Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr. perform in Hoover Auditorium.

Josie said her grandson, Charlie, already decided he wants to live in Lakeside because, “It’s his favorite place on Earth.”
