Lakeside Chautauqua welcomes the Rev. Dr. Thomas G. Long as guest preacher for the 10:30 a.m. Hoover Community Worship Service on Sunday, June 7 in Hoover Auditorium.
Dr. Long’s sermon, titled “Learning How to Tell Time” is based on John 11: 1-21. This passage of scripture records the death of Lazarus. However, an interesting note for the message, is the long clause at the end of the scripture reading with an interesting and challenging statement Martha makes to Jesus.
Why Long chooses this verse will help the congregation engage in scripture and examine a common theme of life: elements of God’s gift of time.
Dr. Long will preach about Lazarus death and Martha’s statement. His preaching style and storytelling will draw one into the message of today’s common theme of running out of time.
He has authored more than 21 books to date and is a frequent contributor to The Christian Century and the Journal for Preachers. In 2010, the Preaching Magazine named his book, The Witness of Preaching, one of the 25 most influential books in preaching for the last 25 years. He is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
Dr. Long regularly presents lectures on various topics. Review a message on “A Living Hope.”
He completed his bachelor’s degree at Erskine College and Masters of Divinity at Erskine Theological Seminary. He later completed his doctorate at Princeton Theological Seminary.
