1:4-5 “Long before He laid the earth’s foundations, He had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of His love, to be made whole and holy by His love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into His family through Jesus Christ.”
1: 11-12 “It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose He is working out in everything and everyone.”
1:13 “It’s in Christ that you, once you heard the truth and believed it (this Message of your salvation), found yourselves home free – signed, sealed, delivered by the Holy Spirit.” (From The Message)
It’s a story from some years ago. A teacher is working with her third class of students and they are having a class discussion.
Suddenly a boy raises his hand to ask a question. “Teacher, what does adoption mean?” Before the teacher can answer his question, a little girl raises her hand and shouts “I know, I know.”
The teacher says, “Ok Susie, what does it mean?” Susie responds: “I know what it means because I was adopted. It means that I grew in mommy’s heart instead of her tummy.”
That is not unlike what the Apostle Paul wrote to the “saints in Ephesus” so long ago as reflected in the verses above. He was reminding the church at Ephesus and all of us as well that we have been adopted.
That’s right – adopted. Yes we grew “in mommy’s tummy” and we have biological parents and at birth we received a name. But from conception on we also have a spiritual adoption, growing in God’s heart and nurtured by His love. He knew us before we knew Him.
In a legal adoption process, papers are signed and sometimes records are sealed. A day may come when a young person grows into adulthood and seeks to discover who they are according to the court documents and birth records.
The scripture tells us that it’s as we grow and come to know Christ that we discover “who we are and what we are living for – signed, sealed, delivered by the Holy Spirit.”
So claim your adoption and celebrate God’s love for you. You have been adopted.
