Name Rachel Meert
Photography/Graphic Design Intern
Indiana University (IU)
South Bend, IN

How did you hear about Lakeside?
I heard about Lakeside through an IU jobs website. I typed in the exact internship I was looking for this summer and Lakeside popped up.

What are you most looking forward to this summer? I am most excited to expand my photography/design portfolio and to photograph things that I never have before.

What do you hope to gain from this experience? I hope to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to survive and succeed in the professional world of photography and design.

Name one goal you hope to achieve this summer? This summer, I want to find an interesting and moving subject for an in-depth photo story.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I love being outside at the beach in the summer, playing recreational sports, going thrifting/antiquing, drawing, taking pictures and going to hole-in-the-wall cafes and listening to a live band.

What is one of your proudest moments you have achieved thus far in life? I have had two major moments in my life when I was extremely proud of myself. One was being the IU Men’s Basketball beat photographer for my school newspaper as a sophomore and traveling all over the Midwest covering their games, also on top of that, when Yogi Ferrell (one of IU’s star players) instagramed the photo I took of him. Second, when I was awarded the 2015 fall photo editor position of my student run newspaper at IU. Also, when I got to pet the penguin at the Jack Hanna show this summer here at Lakeside.

What is your dream job? I have changed my dream job almost every single year since I have been in college because I just have too many. My dream jobs would be traveling the world taking pictures for National Geographic, covering entertainment events, such as sports or concerts, and just recently I discovered that I would love to be a zoo photographer.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself. One of my fun facts is that I use to be a competitive gymnast for 6 years when I was younger. I traveled all over the state of Indiana and the Midwest going to competitions.

  1. I am so proud of my youngest daughter, Rachel! Not only is she intelligent, beautiful, and talented but she has a true zest for life and adventure. Most endearing is her love of family, friends, and finding beauty in this world through her camera’s lens. I couldn’t love her more. I have missed you terribly this summer, Rach, but am so grateful you have had this opportunity to spread your creative wings at Lakeside. Love you bunches!
