Staff Blogger: Kelsey Pepa, Marketing/Digital Communications Intern
Meet the 2016 Lakeside Leadership Academy Conference & Event Planning Interns, Jessica Petrie and Angel Romina:
How did you hear about Lakeside? I found Lakeside online when I was searching for a summer internship. When I began telling people about my application, many of my friends were either familiar with Lakeside or have been here before, and they all recommended that I choose Lakeside for the summer!
What are you most looking forward to this summer at Lakeside? I’m really looking forward to discovering and learning more about Lakeside. Also, I’ve never been this far north in Ohio before, so I’m excited about venturing around and making this place my home.
What do you hope to gain from this experience? I hope to gain professional experience in the field of event planning and management, networking contacts (interns or staff), lifelong friends, a lot of sleepless nights hanging out with interns, a lot of laughs and a lot of Lakeside ice cream!
Name one goal you hope to achieve this summer? One huge goal that I hope to achieve is to visit every place and walk every street in Lakeside. I hope that by doing this I can familiarize myself with Lakeside to be a better intern/Lakesider and so I can learn more about my summer home.
What are some of your hobbies and what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Some of my hobbies include working as a Resident Advisor at OSU, playing with my dog and eating ice cream. In my free time I enjoy baking, exploring new parts of Ohio, cheering on the OSU Buckeyes and working with students.
What is one of your proudest moments you have achieved thus far in life? One of my proudest moments was sophomore year when I was chosen to restructure the Move-In Day system for a residence hall of 1,300 students on Ohio State’s campus. Another great moment was when I was selected to be a Resident Advisor at OSU in a residence hall of 1,100 students. That was a moment I’ll never forget!
What is your dream job? My dream job is to help organize and implement the Summer or Winter Olympics. I’ve always loved the spirit of the Olympic Games so helping put together this monumental event would be a dream come true.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself. I have an identical twin sister who attends OSU with me. We are also both Resident Advisors in the Park-Stradley residence hall on campus.
How did you hear about Lakeside? I had actually never heard about Lakeside before and met a representative at Career Fest at Ohio Dominican University in February. I researched the community and decided to apply for the Conference & Event Planning Internship. I’ve worked with my college’s Campus Activities Board for four years and after a Skype interview with Amber and Emily, I was offered the position. I was very excited about the opportunity and everyone that I told my summer plans to gushed over how magical this place is.
What are you most looking forward to this summer at Lakeside? I am most excited about the entire Lakeside experience; everything from making new friends with all the interns to learning the logistics of event planning. I am also looking forward to growing closer with all the interns. We’re a few weeks in and we’re all getting along but I’m excited to make stronger connections as the summer goes on. Finally, the experience I’ll gain working in the Conference and Event Planning office will be extremely beneficial to me when my time here is up and I obtain a permanent position.
What do you hope to gain from this experience? I’m very excited about working professionally in an event planning position. I had a lot of experience in college in a student leadership position but none in a formal office. Hopefully with this experience I will be able to find a full time job in this field and continue to grow professionally.
Name one goal you hope to achieve this summer? My sister and I ran the St. Jude Relay Marathon this past December with three friends in Memphis, Tennessee. My goal for this summer is to train more and run the half marathon this year. Last year’s race was a relay so we each ran 5.5 miles and passed off the time belt to one another, this year we would stay together and run 13.1 miles. I’m not a runner, so this will be interesting, but I’m excited to help such a great charity.
What are some of your hobbies and what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Some of my hobbies include traveling, reading and being active at my school from peer advisor, Greek life, student government, orientation leader and Otterbein Christian Fellowship. I also love to swim! I swam competitively for 5 years when I was young and I miss it terribly.
What is one of your proudest moments you have achieved thus far in life? To date, my proudest accomplishment would be obtaining my Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies.
What is your dream job? My dream job changes almost daily. I like to keep moving, and get bored thinking about one job for the rest of my life. So I don’t exactly have a specific dream job. Today, I would like to work in event planning for a cruise line, living on the boat. Tomorrow, I would like to be “Alex on the Plaza” for the Today Show. In general, I want to be working somewhere where each day is different. I love being around people so whatever job comes with that benefit is where I’d like to be.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself. My secret talent is I can balance almost anything on my head while walking around with it. Lastly, I have never been stung by a bee or wasp but I’ve been stung twice by jellyfish.
