Ted Hough Celebrates 20 Years at Hoover Auditorium

Hoover Crew 1You may not know him by name, but if you have spent any time attending Hoover evening performances, you will recognize him, or at least the back of his head.

Ted Hough, Hoover Auditorium Audio Engineer & Technical Director, will mark his 20th anniversary of working in Hoover this week. His first show was a concert by The Grass Roots on June 29, 1996, and he has been here every summer since.

Hough started as the sound engineer and quickly became the go-to person when it came to knowledge of, and experience in, Lakeside’s historic theatre.

His arrival at Lakeside was a bit unusual. Keith Addy, former Director of Hoover Programming, tells the story this way, “Some 20 years ago, the sound engineer had to leave unexpectedly for personal reasons. I hired Dan Canalos from a company called Soundwaves to fill in until a more permanent technician could be recruited. Ted was brought in to work one of the events, and ended up signing on as sound engineer for the next season. The rest is history.”

Hough’s tenure began at just the right time. The Hoover sound system was not the best, and he wasted no time in saying we needed to improve the equipment to support the larger shows. Hough made contact with the proper vendors to supply the equipment, and as a result, Lakeside is now able to contract with more well-known artists.

“Keith and I agree – Ted is such a critical part of what happens every night in Hoover,” says Shirley Stary, Senior Vice President of Programming.

“Our venue and equipment are certainly not state-of-the-art, but somehow Ted makes it all come together. Sometimes he appears to be trained in magic as well as audio engineering.”

Several of the entertainers who have performed in Hoover have remarked how great Hough is at what he does. He makes them feel at ease and has a way of finding creative solutions to challenges that come with performing in an 88-year-old theatre.

The Hoover Crew also benefits from Hough’s leadership, and he has earned their praise.

“From Ted, I learned patience, efficiency, problem-solving, adaptability, humor, resilience, loyalty, discipline, dedication, resourcefulness, cooperation and leadership,” said Meredith Francis, forming lighting director. “All things that have translated to my current job.”

Lakeside Chautauqua is blessed to have Hough in this key role, and we look forward to another 20 years of amazing shows in Hoover Auditorium.

Please stop by the sound board to congratulate Hough on this significant milestone.

  1. I was sound engineer in Hoover in 1947. Total crew was two! Equipment not up to today’s standards but it was almost STATE OF THE ART then. Our outside contact was Carol Murray’s father, Bob, who was RCA rep in Cleveland.

  2. Congratulations, Ted! Ted was one of the reasons I enjoyed my internship in Hoover Auditorium so much. He is a great man, a hard worker and I’m so very lucky to have Ted as a friend and career connection! 🙂
