Guest Preacher: The Rev. Dr. Gary V. Simpson

Gary_SimpsonAt the age of 15, the Rev. Dr. Gary V. Simpson stepped into the pulpit to provide the message and challenge the congregation about serving God. Since then, he has lectured at Harvard Divinity School, Yale Divinity School and Princeton Theological Seminary.

The Rev. Dr. Simpson, Senior Pastor of Concord Baptist Church of Christ in Brooklyn, N.Y., will serve as Preacher of the Week from July 17-22. This week is supported by the Knobel Family Endowment.

The Rev. Dr. Simpson answered his call to ministry and at the young age of 20 was ordained.

His congregation is one of a handful of churches in the country serving as a teaching congregation for young pastors. With the support of the Lilly Endowment, the Rev. Dr. Simpson has led the formal Pastoral Residency program at his church to aid young seminary graduates in their transition to fulltime pastoral ministry.

He has continued to challenge his church to focus its core mission around the building of community.

With his servant leadership, the Rev. Dr. Simpson will provide the message at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 17 in Hoover Auditorium based on Luke 15:1-7, entitled “Addressing the Undercurrent.”

Not only has the Rev. Dr. Simpson led the Concord Baptist Church of Christ, he is a tenured associate professor of homiletics at Drew Theological Seminary and is a visiting professor of preaching, worship and the arts at Union Theological Seminary.

Additionally, he has taught and lectured at New Brunswick Theological Seminary, Harvard Divinity School, Yale Divinity School, Princeton Theological Seminary and Candler School of Theology.

He is an accomplished teacher and musician with a heart for ministering to God’s people. His passion of God’s love in his ministry is certainly contagious.

During his week at Lakeside, the Rev. Dr. Simpson will preach at 9:15 a.m. Monday-Thursday during the Faith for Living Hour in Orchestra Hall.

At 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, he will lead Vespers by the Lake, held at the Steele Memorial Bandstand.

Guests may obtain a complimentary Church Pass between 7:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Sunday, valid until 3 p.m. A complimentary Faith for Living Hour Pass is available from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Both of these passes include admissions for guests and auto.
