Mac & CheeseAs the fall weather sets in, so do the nights of eating warm, comfort foods.

This Old-Fashioned Baked Mac & Cheese recipe is my favorite and one that my parents have been cooking for years. As for where it comes from, that’s a mystery to me. It is perfect for those who love an easy-to-follow recipe and extra cheesy entrée, especially for kids who are picky eaters.

This recipe serves about 5 people, so feel free to cut the recipe in half or double it depending on the number of guests you expect. You’ll need to allow 15 minutes for preparation, and 25 minutes of cooking time.


  • 8 oz. (1/4 pkg.) Elbow Macaroni
  • 1/4 cup Margarine or Butter
  • 3 tbsp All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/8 tbsp Dry Mustard
  • 1/8 tbsp Salt (optional)
  • 1/8 tsp Black Pepper
  • 2 cups Milk
  • 2 cups (8 oz) Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese
  • 1 cup Croutons (my family skips the croutons and sometimes adds Ritz Crackers)

When my parents make this recipe, they like to be creative and add their own ingredients. For those who want to step out of their comfort zone, feel free to add some fresh or frozen broccoli, bacon, ham or any other ingredients that seem tasty!


To get started, preheat the oven at 350 degrees. Then, cook the macaroni for about 3 minutes, drain the water and cover and set aside.

In a medium saucepan, melt the margarine or butter and blend in the flour, mustard, salt and pepper. Leave over the heat until the mixture is smooth and bubbly, and start to gradually add milk. (Don’t forget to keep stirring because the mixture will stick to the bottom of the pan and burn!)

Once the milk has been added, continue to cook and stir the mixture over medium heat until it begins to boil. After boiling, bring the sauce to a simmer for one minute, stirring constantly.

Next, gradually stir in the cheese over low heat until it’s completely melted. Once melted, add the pasta and lightly mix together. Pour into a two-quart casserole dish and top with the croutons (if you use them).

Finally, bake for 25 minutes and voila! You have a delicious dinner that is sure to please the entire family.
